In India, new crop cultivars are developed by the following four important organizations:
- Crop Research Institutes/centers of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research located in different states.
- State Agricultural Universities located in different states.
- All India coordinated projects of different crops, and
- Private seed companies (national and multinational).
New varieties of a crop are developed after thorough testing in All India coordinated project over several locations for 2-3 years. The main objective of coordinated project of each crop is to develop high yielding, early maturing, and good quality varieties resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses
